Advantages of using a FENYX Dispense Pump in IVD Systems

Monday, 17th June 2024

When deciding between an air over liquid dispensing system and a piston pump for the hardware design of an IVD system, it's important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option. An air over liquid dispensing system may be effective in certain industries, but it often presents challenges in integration and reliability within manufacturing environments. Conversely, a valveless piston pump, like the Fluid Metering FENYX Variable Dispense Pump, is often better suited for critical ISO:13485 applications.

A valveless piston pump, such as the Fluid Metering, Inc., Variable Dispense (FENYX) Pump, boasts only four wetted components. This streamlined design, featuring just one device with two moving parts, enhances overall reliability. The FENYX Pump eliminates the need for separate priming or flushing pumps, thereby simplifying both the fluidic architecture and software design. Its adjustable angle facilitates quicker startup times by integrating priming, flushing, and dispensing into a single unit. Additionally, with fewer moving parts, the pump operates more quietly, typically within the 40 to 50 dB range.

Moreover, the FENYX Pump's limited interaction points between the reservoir and dispense site—restricted to the inlet and outlet of the pump head—reduce the risk of clogging. With fewer parameters to manage, specifically the maintenance of rotary speed, acceleration, and pump head angle, the need for constant recalibration is minimised, leading to reduced downtime and waste. The FENYX Pump has demonstrated exceptional reliability, showing minimal dispense drift over millions of cycles, with verification including 5 million dispenses and 2 million angle changes.
